ohrid in summer

It was the first time for me to be in Ohrid during summer. Ohrid in summer is all about beaches. It was so crowded everywhere. Such condition is so called (by Japanese) "imo-arai (like washing potatoes in a sink)" state. For a girl who only goes to a private beach of a luxurious resort in a tropical island, it was a quite experience. It reminded me beaches in the Miura peninsula in summer.

夏のオフリドに行くのは今回初めてだったのですが、なんとまあ混んでたこと。夏のオフリドといえば、「ビーチ」なのですが、どこもめちゃ混み。三浦半島のビーチみたいに山というか岩がすぐそこまで迫っているビーチが多いので、狭いビーチがいくつもあるのですが、そこに隙間がないほど人がひしめき合ってました。ビーチといえば、南の島のゴージャスリゾートのプライベートビーチしか行かない私には(おほほほ)、ちょっとびっくりの光景でした。

Now, the state of emergency was lifted as of yesterday, my working hours are back to normal so as the air temperature. Good. It is really hard for me to get up early in the morning. It increases the amount of my coffee consumption a day. Usually in Macedonia, the style of coffee is turkish coffee. If you go to a fancy place like Lezet, you will be served by this kind of cute turkish coffee set.

ようやく昨日の夜「非常事態宣言」は解除されて、気温もオフィスアワーも通常に戻りました。朝早起きはホントにつらいんですよねえ。一日のコーヒー摂取量がとたんに増えます。こちらのコーヒーは、通常「トルココーヒー」。レゼットみたいなスタイルのあるカフェに行くと、こんなかわいいトルココーヒーセットでサーブしてくれます。

My favorite Cafe Ljubov is a sister cafe of my favorite restaurant Poveke Ljubov (although it is closed now for a while). Since it is more than 40C outside lately, it is better to have a coffee inside. Ljubov has a nice taste of interior decoration; chic, relaxing, and cozy. And it plays nice taste of music; jazzy, mostly. The location is a bit hideaway, which is also what I like about.

カフェ「リュボヴ」は私のお気に入りレストラン「ポベキェ・リュボブ」の姉妹カフェです。ここ最近40度以上の酷暑が続いている中、やっぱお外コーヒーは出来ないので、中でお茶するってカンジです。リュボブはナイスなインテリアが落ち着くんですよねえ。場所もちょっと隠れ家っぽいし。ジャズ系音楽もセンスいいし。まあ、お気に入りカフェのひとつです。

state of emergency

Because of the heatwave and occasional fires from the heat, Macedonia Government declared "State of Emergency." It is expected to reach 44C in this weekend. Ooooooh. What is different from ordinary life under the "state of emergency"? Well, first of all, the office hour is different. You can go home at 1pm. Nice. But you have to start from 7am ;-P Eeeh. What else. It is said: Better to drink more water. Better to avoid going out in the middle of the day. Of course. Better to avoid the public transportation because it is uncomfortable. True. And, maybe better to have a sunshade umbrella if you need to go out (according to my suggestion). I saw one Macedonian lady today with an umbrella. Why not, there is a practical reason.

またまた熱波がきているそうで、マケドニア政府が「緊急事態宣言」なるものを発しました。今週末は44度くらいになってしまうらしい。げげー。クーラーきかないんだよなあ、うち。それでは「非常事態宣言」下ではなにが違うのか。んー。オフィスアワーが1時まで。ほほほ。その代わり朝7時からだけどね。注意事項としては、水をよく飲むこととか、昼間の外出は避けること、公共交通機関はuncomfortableだから避けるように、とか言ってます。ついでに、昼間出かけるときは日傘さしましょうとかいえばいいのにね。でも今日、とうとうマケドニア人のご夫人が傘さしているのを見かけました。ようやくその実用性に気付いたか。はははは。

Georgi Sarevski is a young Macedonian Jazz guitarist. There was his concert as a part of the Skopje Summer Festival. I do not know anything about how to play a guitar, but I can tell the way he plays a guitar is very unique and creative, and I like it.

ギョルギ・シャレフスキは若いマケドニア人ジャズギタリストです。今月ずっとやっているスコピエ・サマー・フェスティバルの一環の彼のコンサートに行ってきました。ギターとかよく知りませんが、彼の弾き方は非常にユニークかつクリエイティブなのではないかと思います。そういうの好きなんですよね。

beer festival in prilep

There was a beer festival in Prilep. Went there to check out. It seems it is a big thing for Prilep every year. This year it is said 400,000 people came for this 2 days event. Out of 2 million population of Macedonia, 20% came. Sounds big. The main street was closed about 500m, and there were bunch of similar stalls selling similar skara (Macedonian grills) and beers (Skopsko and Dab, both are Macedonian beer). Well, from a Japanese point of view, it was like a street fair in front of a neighborhood shrine.

プリレップでビアフェスティバルなるものがあったので行ってきました。毎年行われるビアフェスティバルはプリレップでは大イベントらしく、ニュースで今年は二日間で40万人来ました、とか言ってました。そりゃあ総国民人口二百万人のうちの20%が来るんじゃ、大きなイベントですなあ。メイン道路を500mくらい封鎖して、スカラ(マケドニア風BBQ)とマケドニアビール(スコプスコとダブ)の出店がいくつか出てたくらいなんで、んー、まあ日本で言えば、そこらへんの神社の前の出店イベントくらいかな、というカンジでした。

rolling stones in belgrade

It happens to be when I was in Belgrade was the one day before of the Rolling Stones' concert in Belgrade. It was a big thing in Balkan, I guess. It was a topic in Macedonia too. I felt it also when I was in Belgrade, because people talk about it all the time - like taxi drivers, and there were lots of securities everywhere. The photo shows the venue of the concert, of which field was specially made for this purpose, because the originally planned venue, a stadium, was disapproved by an animal rights NGO by saying the "noises" scare the horses that are held behind the stadium. Before, there was a hill and trees in that field. But, now it was flattened out and constructing the stage. The photo left is in the morning of Friday, and the right is late afternoon. Serbians were working really hard for Rolling Stones.

ちょうどベオ出張に行った日がローリングストーンズがベオグラードでコンサートをやる一日前の日だったので、なんかしらちょっと街が盛り上がってました。まあベオに限らずバルカンにとっての大イベントですから。マケドニアでもけっこう前から話題になってましたし。たまたまコンサート会場がうちのベオのオフィスの裏だったので、準備状況がよく見えてました。もともとは大きなスタジアムでの開催が企画されていたのですが、そのスタジアムの裏に飼われている馬がローリングストーンズの「騒音」で怖がるからダメだと主張するNGOがいたため、急遽会場変更となり、このコンサートのためだけに丘と木を切り開いて作った会場が写真のところ。写真左はコンサート一日前の朝、右は午後。はじめ見たときには間に合わないんじゃないかと思ったけど、なかなかちゃくちゃくと会場施設が建設されていました。

If you want to eat sea fish in Skopje, where is no ocean in the country, Frutti di Mare is the choice. It offers somehow fresh fish from the sea and cooks it with a simple way, which fits to Japanese taste. Squid ink risotto is also good there.

海のないマケドニアで海の魚を食べたいと思ったら、この「フルティ・ディ・マーレ」に行きます。なぜか一応新鮮な海の魚を用意してて、シンプルな味付けで調理してくれるので、日本人の味覚にはうれしいです。イカ墨のリゾットもおすすめです。

yellow leaves already

I am sorry for talking about weather all the time lately, but now leaves of linden trees are turning into yellow, which usually happen in the end of summer. Maybe does it mean stronger UV than last year ? and/or because of the heat from African wind, or what not. Good, I am using a sunshade umbrella everyday, anyway. And I have seen there are more people wearing a hat than last year. Does it now Macedonian's awareness towards UV become increased? or just a fashion. Either way, I would still continue to propose to use a sunshade umbrella as a part of summer fashion.

天気の話ばっかりで恐縮ですが、ここにきて、いつもは夏の終わりに黄色くなる菩提樹の葉っぱも、もう黄色くなり始めています。え、それってやっぱあのアフリカの熱風のせいかしら。それとも紫外線が例年より強いのか?　　あの40度の天気以降、すっかり最近はずっと日傘をさしているのでべつにいいんですけどね。なんかそういえば、気のせいか、今年は去年よりも帽子をかぶっている人が多いような気もする。ようやくマケドニア人の紫外線に対する認識もあがってきたか。か、ただのファッションか。でもやっぱみなさん、日傘ですよ、夏のファッションとして。来年こそは誰かマケドニア人が日傘さしているのを見かけたいですね。

african wind days are over

After consecutive 10 days of 40C weather, it is now back to regular summer. It seems that the hot weather was caused by African desert's heat wind passing over the Balkan. One day, it was very hot although it was cloudy. It was cloudy with desert sands. After 40C, 30C weather is very cool and nice. Watermelon is in full season.

10日くらい続いた40度以上の日々もようやく終わり、普通の夏の天気に戻りました。どうもその40度の天気はアフリカの砂漠からから来た熱風によって引き起こされていたらしい。ある日は、砂漠の砂でどんよりと空の高いところで曇っていて、かつ異常に暑い時とかあったりしました。もう40度の天気を味わった後は、30度なんて涼しくて気持ちいいくらいです。もう、スイカがフルシーズンです。

Last week, he was in Macedonia, doing "Concert marathon" for 2 days. Well, I went to the 2nd day, it was 3 hours performance in a warm room. Indeed, it was like marathon, requiring endurance. But it was fun. He played with his students and other talented young Macedonian musicians. It was like a promotion event for those young people.

シモン・トルプチェスキは世界で活躍している有名マケドニア人ピアニストです。先日、スコピエで二日間にわたる彼の「コンサートマラソン」なるものがあったので、二日目だけ行ってみました。いやいやそれでも十分「マラソン」でした。エアコンの利きが悪い暑い部屋で三時間。耐久性が要求されました。でも楽しかったですよ。すごく楽しそうにピアノ弾くんですよね、彼は。そして彼の生徒やら才能のあるマケドニア人の若いミュージシャンやらとのパフォーマンスもなかなかよかったです。若者のプロモーションの場だったのかしら、ってカンジでしたけど。

Went to London for a weekend. It was rainy and 19C there. It was hard to imagine how it is like to be in 19C weather once you are in 35-40C in Skopje, so I did not bring enough clothes. Well, shopping is also fun part of trip to a big city, and I bought a cute jacket to survive the rainy, chilly weather. And what else. Enjoyed massage, good food, Japanese grocery shopping, and good entertainment. All things as I always do in a big city. It happens to be there was "Taste of London" event, enjoying a bit of signature dishes from famous restaurants of London in the Regent park. It was cool.

ちょっと週末ロンドンに行ってきました。19度の雨模様の天気だということは天気予報で知っていたけど、35-40度のスコピエにいながらにして19度の天気を想像するのは難しく、持っていった服ではぜんぜん寒かったです。まあいいんですけどね。都会に行ったら買い物はしたいから。かわいいジャケット買っちゃいました。その他、日本食の食料品買出し、マッサージ、映画とかシアターとか、都会に行ったらいつもすることを一通り。たまたまタイミングよく、ロンドンの数々の有名レストランが出店を出して、その店の有名料理をちょっとだけ味見させてくれるという「テイスト・オブ・ロンドン」なるイベントをやっていて、参加しました。ふふ、いろいろ味見できてラッキー。

Like more than 30C everyday with strong sunshine. No wonder melons and watermelons are in season.....

暑いんすよ。ここのところ毎日30℃越え。日差しもめっちゃ強いし。そりゃあ、メロンもスイカも出回る季節になったわけです。。。

Last weekend, Bebel Gilberto. This weekend, Laurie Anderson. Lots of events going on in Skopje lately. Simon Trpceski, a globally famous Macedonian pianist, will have a concert in Skopje this week also.

先週末はべベル・ジルベルト。今週末はローリー・アンダーソン。なんだかここのところイベントが続いています。今週はマケドニアが世界に誇るピアニスト、サイモン・トルプチェスキのコンサートもあるんだよなあ。

And in this Japanese Garden, there are bonsai exhibitions. Actually one of them (photo left) is 250 years old. It is amazing, which means, how to make bonsai work was already known in Macedonia in 250 years ago.

そしてその植物園には盆栽の展示があるのですが、なんとそのうちのひとつに250年前からマケドニアで育てられている盆栽(写真右)がありました。ってことは、250年前にすでにマケドニアには盆栽の作り方が伝わっていたってこと?　なんかすごいなー。

In Skopje, there is a Japanese garden opened few weeks ago. It is made by 2 Macedonian who like Bonsai or Japanese style gardening and got idea of this garden from books. Well, it looks like exactly Japanese botanical gardens I used to visit for school trips when I was a kid. It means, good job.

最近スコピエに「日本庭園」がオープンしたと聞いて早速行ってみました。日本庭園というか、日本スタイル植物園、かな。盆栽とか日本庭園好きな二人のマケドニア人が趣味で始めた小さな植物園。本で勉強しただけらしいけれど、デザインとかけっこうきちんと出来ていて、ホントに日本の植物園みたい。子供の頃、遠足とかでよく行った大船フラワーセンターとかさ。よく出来てますよ。

monsoon season?

There is no such a thing called monsoon season in Macedonia, but lately, it is like we are in the monsoon season. Every evening, there is a storm with lighting and thunder. Very wet. But not like the Japanese rainy season. There is sunshine during the day. Well, I do not dislike this stormy weather sometimes. It is a kind of refreshing if it is sometimes.

最近のスコピエの天気は、なんかモンスーンシーズンのように夕方になると雨と雷があるんですよねえ。そんなものはマケドニアにはホントはないはずなんですけどねえ。まあ、最近の世界的な異常気象のひとつとしてドライなマケドニアにもたまにはウェットな日々もある、みたいな。でも日本の梅雨とは違って昼間はいい天気で太陽があって、けっこういいんですよ、夕方雨降るのは。次の日の朝、さわやかで。

linden season

Lately, linden trees are blooming in Skopje, sending sweet smell out to everywhere. Skopje's air is right now linden flower flavored fragrance. It is especially nice at night when I open the windows, the flower smell comes into the bed room. It is actually amazing how Skopje is full with linden trees. I did not realize until this season. It is like sakura in Japan, it is everywhere on the streets, so I name linden "Skopijanka (Skopje's) flower."

最近、スコピエの菩提樹の花が満開であちこちでいい匂いを放っています。もうスコピエの空気が菩提樹香水状態。夜、窓を開けて寝るときとか、ベッドルームにほんわり匂いが入ってくる感じが非常にいいんですよねえ。スコピエにこんなにいっぱい菩提樹が植わっているとは思いませんでした。道々、菩提樹がずらーっと並んでいるんですよ。なんか「日本の桜」みたいに、「菩提樹はスコピエの花」とかネーミングしてみよっかな。

ここ数週間、ストリートパフォーマンスフェスティバルと遊園地がマケドニア広場で開催中。

st. spas

St. Spas church is a basic tourist site in the Old Town for a first-time Skopje visitor (although, I had never been there until this time ;-p). The church is famous for its wood carved icons, very beautiful work, and its unique design of construction, which is the half-underground building; because in the 17th century, Turkish Sultan prohibited Christian structures from being higher than mosques.

聖スパス教会は旧市街にある、スコピエの基本観光サイトです(ていうか、今回まで自分も行ったことなかったのですが)。木彫りのイコンと半地下建築で有名な教会です。なぜ半地下かというと、当時(17世紀)のオスマントルコ時代のサルタンが、モスクよりも高く教会を建てることを禁じていたからです。
