Unlike a hitchhikers' guide to Macedonia, this book is a real guide book. One of few things I think that Macedonia should be really proud of is the old monasteries. This guide book must be really interesting for those people who like old monasteries, churches, frescoes and icons, with all those information of who is the designer or author, in what year, and what this painting means, etc. This kind of information material is very important for tourism promotion. It is published by Matica and still available to buy at its book shop. It is not well known, but you can actually stay at some of these monasteries as a visitor.

この｢A Guide to the Macedonian Monasteries」はヒッチハイカーズガイド to マケドニアとは違って、ホントのガイドブックです。マケドニアは古い修道院がいっぱいあって、古い教会やら、フレスコやら、イコンやらが好きな人には非常に興味深いディスティネーションだと思うのですが、このガイドブックはそういう人たちにもってこいの本ではないかと思います。作者が誰で、いつの年代に建てられてとか、この画の意味は、とかいろいろ解説がついていて、観光促進にはとっても大事なガイドブックになりそうです。あまり知られていませんが、いくつかの修道院に普通の観光客も泊まることが出来ます。けっこう面白い経験になるのではないかなと思います。

Stara Kukya (Old House) is a restaurant using a renovated old merchant wooden house from 19th century. Since Skopje does not have many old houses, this is a very rare type of restaurant that people can enjoy, especially tourists. It serves Macedonian food with modern presentation. Nice place to take foreign guests.

「スタラ・クキャ(旧家)」は19世紀くらいの古い木造商家を改築して使っているレストランです。スコピエには古い家とかがあまり残っていないので、ここは貴重なタイプのレストランです。マケドニア料理をモダンにプレゼンテーションでだすので、けっこうこじゃれた食事が楽しめます。外国からのゲストとかを連れて行くのにいいレストランです。

Mr. Atanas Talevski is a famous Macedonian photographer who lives and has a gallery in Ohrid. He takes pictures of village scene in Macedonia, which are exact images that people would have about Macedonia. His photos are used in the Bradt Guide Macedonia. You can buy his work in his gallery. It can be very good souvenir from Macedonia.

アタナス・タレフスキ氏はマケドニアの有名なフォトグラファーです。マケドニアの村々の写真を撮る人なのですが、その写真はまさにマケドニアの村のイメージ通りの写真っていうのでしょうか、ノスタルジックな田舎風景が非常にいいカンジの作品です。彼の写真は｢ブラットガイド－マケドニア」というガイドブックにも使われています。オフリドに行った際には、彼のギャラリーでお土産に彼の写真を買うってのもお勧めです。

srekjna nova godina

Happy new year! Back from my vacation. This weekend is Orthodox new year. So, it is not too late to say "Srekjna nova godina (happy new year)" yet. There will be a special new year lunch tomorrow.

republic of vevchani

"Republic of Vevcani" is actually a municipality of Republic of Macedonia. But they had strong tendency to be independent, even once held a referendum. They even have a passport and money. Well, it is actually a passport and money for tourists for the famous Vevcani carnival, which are held in January every year. In 2008, it will be from January 12 to 13. 「ベフチャニ共和国」は実はマケドニア共和国の中のひとつの地方自治体なのですが、けっこう独立心が強くって、その昔、住民投票でマケドニアから独立して｢ベフチャニ共和国｣作りたいとか言ってたこともあるらしい。パスポートとかお金までまで独自で作っちゃったりして。というか、このパスポートとお金は実はベフチャニのカーニバルに来る観光客用なんですけどね。ベフチャニのカーニバルはそのエスニックさがけっこう有名みたいです。http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/326486/

ednooki

Ednooki (one eyed) is my favorite Macedonian political satire cartoon TV program. Sometime they use English, especially for topics of international politics, but most of the topics are local politics and it is in Macedonian. Still I enjoyed it a lot. I can tell it is well done and funny from how characters of current political players are depicted. It always takes up current hot topics, like the fist fighting in the Parliament or the country name dispute with Greek, with comical skits. It is like a cartoon version of the Saturday Night Live. If you are familiar with Macedonian politics, you would definitely laugh. (and imagine, why "one eyed"?)

「エドノオキ(一つ目)」は私のお気に入りの痛烈な政治風刺アニメ番組です。マケドニアの政治や国際関係などでホットなネタを超おかしく描きます。国際関係ネタのときは英語でやってくれるのですが、マケドニア政治ネタはマケドニア語です。それでもけっこう可笑しいと思えるのは、やっぱり画がキャラ立ちしているからでしょうか。マケドニア政治の主要プレイヤーの似顔絵が超そっくり。扱うネタもその時ホットな政治ネタが多く、例えば、この間あった国会での政治家同士の殴りあい事件とか、マケドニアの国名に関するギリシアとの確執とかを、おもしろおかしく風刺します。その痛烈さ具合がサタデーナイトライブの時事ネタスキットみたい。マケドニア政治ネタに詳しい人はぜひ見てみてください↑。笑えると思います。(なぜ「一つ目｣というタイトルか含め)。

shadows (senki)

The famous Macedonian film director Milcho Manchevski's new movie, "Shadows (the original name is Senki)" had a premiere opening this weekend in Skopje. It was a beautiful movie, featuring scenes of modern Skopje and Macedonia very well, not only physical scenes, but also in terms of Macedonian's life, culture, customs, practices and habits, etc...(for those who are wondering how my life in Skopje is like, maybe this movie is a good reference ;-P) Although I maybe not fully understood the movie because it was only in Macedonian (no English subtitle), but still I enjoyed a lot. Especially I like Milco Mancevski's shooting angle. It has a certain, unique taste in the visuals with something very thick, strong contrast of colors and objects, thus creating the beautiful images.

今週末、マケドニア人の有名な映画監督ミルチョ・マンチェフスキの新作映画「シャドウ(マケドニア語では「センキ」)」のオープニングがありました。現代のスコピエやマケドニアの生活、カルチャー、習慣、風景などなどが、ミルチョ・マンチェフスキ独特の映像美でよくフィーチャーされていて、非常によく出来た映画でした。おすすめです。

Tose Proeski, the biggest pop star in Macedonia and the Balkans, died from a traffic accident yesterday. He was still 26 years old. Whole Macedonia is weighed down by grief, including Prime Minister and President of the country. All Macedonian TV stations are on-airing special memorial programs these 2 days. This atmosphere reminded me the feeling when Yutaka Ozaki died. In both cases, I was in the situation of "ah, yeah... I heard about his name, but not his music...was he that great?" kind. I do not listen pop music much (^ ^; ...

マケドニアで、というか、バルカンで大人気のポップスター「トシェ・プロエスキ」が昨日交通事故で亡くなりました。まだ26歳だったのに。マケドニアでは昨日・今日と国中でうちひしがれています。TVで特番とか一日中やってたりして。この感覚はなにかに似ている、と思ったら、尾崎豊が亡くなったときのカンジに似ているんですねえ。今回もあの時も、「あー、その人名前は知ってるけど音楽聴いたことないなあ」状態でした。。。。ポップス聞かないんすよ、あんまり。

A watermill in Vevchani, a village near Ohrid. People near the village bring bags filled with wheat for watermilling. Do not forget to put your name on it.

オフリドの近くの村「ベフチャニ」というところで見かけた水力製粉小屋(つまり水車小屋)。村の近くの人が獲れた小麦を袋に入れて持ってきます。袋に名前が書いてあるところがなんかかわいい。

sintezis

Synthesis (Синтезис) is a musician group who plays traditional sounds of Macedonia with contemporary arrangement, using traditional instrument. Since they are traveling around the world, it was a rare opportunity to see their live in Macedonia. It was very nice performance, indeed. What can I say, it is powerful, subtle, quiet, peaceful, sound, maybe. No wonder they are popular in the world music scene.

Synthesisはマケドニアの伝統楽器を使った伝統的な音を近代的に表現するミュージシャングループです。ワールドミュージック界ではけっこう人気らしく、いつも世界のどこかを飛び回っているのでマケドニアでライブを聴けるのは貴重な機会なんだそうです。しみじみとしててきれいなメロディーで、ほんとに人気なのも十分うなずける音楽でした。ブラボー。

These naive dolls are from Zrovci, a municipality in the eastern Macedonia. These ethnic clothes are a style from the eastern Macedonia. Very exotic. The photo looks blur, but it is in focus in fact. The dolls look blur, because the dolls are made from wool, and their surface is a bit shaggy, so when you actually see them with the naked eye, they exactly look like this, blurry in real. I think that makes dolls look more simple, naive and precious.

この素朴な人形は東部マケドニアのツルノフチという町で作られたものです。東部マケドニアの伝統衣装を着たカンジがいいカンジなので、なんかいいお土産になりそう。この写真、なんかブレてる感じがするけれど、でもそうじゃないんです。ピンはきっちりあっているんですけど、この人形の素材が羊の毛で、なんか表面がもしゃもしゃしているため、そう見えるだけです。ホントの目で見ても、なんかもしゃもしゃして見るので目の焦点が定めにくい感じです。

The first day at the office after Easter is the day to exchange eggs with wishes of healthy happy years. Like last year, I received colorful, boiled eggs. Beautiful work as always.

イースター連休後のオフィス初日はタマゴ交換会。去年もそうでしたが、カラフルに色づけされたゆで卵をいただきました。

It seems kids wear costumes on April 1 in Macedonia. Looks like a spring Halloween party. But there are more queens and fairies than zombies.

マケドニアの4月1日は、子供たちがなにやら仮装する日なんですかね。ハロウィーンの日のように仮装した子供たちが広場に出回っていました。でもハロウィーンのゾンビやらフランケンシュタインやらとは違って今日は妖精とかお姫様とか、もっと明るい仮装が多かったのは春だからか。

This year, the orthodox easter and catholic easter are somehow in the same weekend, April 8. Now chicks are ready.

今年は正教もカトリックもイースターが4月8日の同じ週末だそうで。去年はお互い一週間くらいずれてたんですよね。スーパーにヒヨコが出回ってました。準備ですかい。

Среќен празник (Happy Holiday)! Today, March 8, is a day for women in Macedonia (or in the region). Girls receive flowers and gifts, and are treated with nice dinner or something else to spoil girls (i.e. massage?). I got only flowers since there is no one to pamper me with nice dinner today ;-p ....　I guess this custom came from the International Women's day (see Wiki), but it seems people here are more like focusing on the "cute" part of the idea. Good for me. Too bad it was not a holiday; my dear women co-workers were working hard as usual.

マケドニア(というかこの辺の地域)では今日、3月8日は「女の子の日」 。女の子はお花やプレゼントをもらったり、ナイスなディナーに連れて行ってもらったりします。私もお花とかはもらったりしたけど、ナイスなディナーに連れてってくれる人がいませんでした。ふふ。。。　この「女の子の日」はたぶんいわゆる「国際女性デー」(→Wiki参照)にちなんだものであろうと推測するが、なんか本来の意味よりもっと「おいしい」部分だけにフォーカスが当たっている感じがしますね。しかし祭日じゃないのが残念。みんないつもと同じようにがつがつ働いていました。

martinka

It is March from today. Martinka is something you wear on March 1 and keep it until you see a swallow back from south first time in the spring. This red/white ball is a kind of martinka, and I am also wearing a red/white yarn woven bracelet, another kind of martinka. And then once you see the swallow, you take this martinka off and tie it to a twig of a tree like what Japanese do with omikuji. It is an old Macedonian tradition to wish your good luck and good health. I am wondering if I can find the swallow before the bracelet is gone somewhere as it was so in the last year.... And I do not remember if I have ever seen swallows in Skopje. Wish me luck.

3月ですな。マケドニアの古い習慣で、3月1日はこの赤と白の「マルティンカ」を身に着ける日です。今年最初のツバメを見るまでずっと身につけ続け、今年最初のツバメを見つけたら、マルティンカをはずして木の枝に結び付けるということをするそうです。今年の健康と幸福を祈る儀式みたいなもんだそうで。ちなみに私はこのケイタイにつけてるボンボンのマルティンカの他に、赤と白の毛糸で編んだミサンガみたいなブレスレットも身に着けてます。ツバメが先か、自然に切れてなくなるのが先か。去年はなくしちゃったんだよなあ、いつの間にか。しかも去年ツバメなんて見かけたけっかな、スコピエで。。。

teshkoto

More about the wedding. Among many rituals, dance & music is always fun to see. And this male dance "Teshkoto" was very amazing. The performance with squatting down and standing up and holding the balance and moving slowly seems requiring lots of muscle work. Obviously, very difficult to perform. Not only that, the dance is improvised by the leader with his rhythm and patterns at that moment, and the followers have to perform as the leader perform, so as musicians. So, the performance we see at that moment will never be the same. Always different. Sounds very jazzy. Very cool. And, especially when the leader stands up on the traditional drum (Tapan) and performs the solo dance and holds the pose, it is very impressive. Teshkoto means "the Hard One" and the dance expresses the sufferings of the Macedonian throughout the history but always successfully overcoming by people's wisdom, or something.

結婚式の話の続きですが、いろいろある伝統儀式の中で、やっぱり見ていて楽しいのは音楽とダンスでしょ。この男の人のダンス「テシュコト」はなかなか見ごたえがあります。テシュコトという意味は「大変なやつ」（"難しい踊り"とでもいいましょうか）みたいな意味で、踊りながらしゃがんだり立ったり、それもバランスをとりながら「ため」ながら非常にゆっくりしゃがんだり立ったりするので、ポーズをホールドするのにすごい筋肉が要って、ほんとに大変そうなダンスです。特にゆったりとした前半部では、大体のパターンはあるものの組立からリズムに至るまでリーダーの即興であり、リーダーの動きに他のダンサーが付き従い、演奏もそれに応じて変化していくそうで、２度と同じ踊りが演じられる事の無いのが特徴とのこと。うーん、ジャズみたいですな。なんかかっこいい。またタパンというドラムの上にリーダが立っちゃって踊るソロもすばらしいです。このダンスはマケドニアが東西の文化の十字路としていろんな国の支配下にあった試練と忍耐の歴史を表現しているそうです。

It should be worth to mention in the Yahoo Adventures or exploringmacedonia or other information site of Macedonian toursim, the Galicka Svadba (Wedding in Galicnik) is a traditional style wedding ceremony, which is held once a year, around this time, in a village called Galichnik. As you can see, people wear traditional clothes, *very ethnic*, and the ceremony follows a series of traditional customs and rituals. Such as: expecting of the drums, mother-in law's hora, taking the bridal to the village fountain for water, hanging the wedding flag, invitation of the deaths, shaving the son-in-low, to bake the bread, etc. Since almost no one lives in the village anymore, dispersed to the world, this once-a-year event is an opportunity for the village family to come back there and hold the family gatherings as well as preserve their traditions. It started almost 40 years ago, and now it becomes a very good tourist attraction. Only those who have family originally from the village can have this unique wedding.

ヤフーアドベンチャーに載っていてもおかしくないこの「ガリチニック村の結婚式」はその伝統的なスタイルのセレモニーが有名で、年に一回だけ今くらいの時期に行われます。ガリチニック村は過疎化が進んで今はほとんど誰も住んでいないのですが、年に一回このイベントのために村出身者が帰ってきてファミリーが一同に会すそうです。もともとは伝統を守るために４０年くらい前からスタートしたイベントで、いまやひとつの観光アトラクションとして有名になりました。その結婚式は２日間続き、数々の伝統儀式が行われます。民族ダンスとか音楽はもちろんのこと、「婿の髭剃り」とか「先祖の招待」とかいろいろ意味のある習慣を盛り込んだ流れとなってます。この結婚式を挙げられるのは、先祖がこの村出身の人だけだそうです。
