a hitchhiker's guide to macedonia

By using the Orthodox easter and May-day for a part of it, I made my own Golden week in Macedonia. But I did not go anywhere this time, instead, stayed home all the time. One of the activities that I did during the GW was this: Reading the "A hitchhiker's guide to Macedonia ... and my soul". This book was written by a Korean American who lived in Macedonia for 2 years with her Macedonian boyfriend from 1999 to 2001. It is not a guide book, but her diary at that time and essays afterwards as her comments to the diary. It was so funny that whatever she felt or her impressions about Macedonia and Macedonians or Macedonian culture is almost the same as mine. All the details. I am glad that I am not the only one who feels so (^_^;　This book is available only in Macedonia, I guess. Or not even available at a shop anymore (issued in 2003). It is a very cool book and I would recommend to anyone who will live here to get to know what kind of place Macedonia is. Or experience of living here for more than 2 years makes this book even funnier. Oh, well, anyway, too bad it is not easy to find it. Instead, I put in the photo other books for your reference. Bradt Guide Macedonia is always good to have for travel.

マケドニア正教のイースターとメーデーの休日をくっつけて自分ゴールデンウィークにしていた日々も終わってしまい、今日から仕事復活でした。今回の長い休みはどこにも行かず、ずっとスコピエにいておうちにこもってました。ま、ちょっとやることがあって。でもって、そんな中で読んで面白かった本がこれ「ヒッチハイカーズガイド to マケドニア」。ガイドブックじゃないんですけどね。1999-2001年にマケドニアに住んでいた韓国系アメリカ人の女の子が書いた本です。彼女の当時の日記にあとからつけた彼女のコメントが入っていて、マケドニアとは、マケドニア人とは、みたいなことが面白おかしく書かれています。けっこううなずけるところも多くって、なーんだマケドニア人のここがおかしい、と思っていたのは私だけじゃなかったのね、となんだかホッとしました。残念ながらマケドニア以外では売っていないと思いますが、まあ、これからマケドニアに住む人が読むにはけっこう心の準備が出来ていいのではないでしょうか。か、それともここに二年以上住んだらこの本を面白いと思えるのか。まあどっちにしろもうマケドニアのお店でも見つかるかどうかわかんないけどね。2003年発行だったから。ま、そんなことで、旅行する人にはブラットガイド・マケドニアという立派なガイド本があるので、そっちもお勧めしておきます。

My favorite jazzy band, Project Zlust, had a live at Magor last night. Jazz in a small space like Magor reminded me of "Smoke" in NY, used-to-be my neighborhood jazz club.

私のお気に入りのジャズ系バンド「プロジェクト・ズラスト」がマゴールでライブやってました。マゴールみたいな狭いスペースでぎゅっとなってジャズを聴くと、NYに住んでた頃のご近所ジャズバー「スモーク」を思い出します。

Myau Myau is a newly opened Jazz restaurant by Georgi Sarevski near the city park. As expected from a good Jazz bar, it has very good sound system. It is nice to have jazz music as background when eating. It serves good Italian. It reminds me of New York's restaurants. It is a completely new style restaurant & bar in Skopje in terms of playing jazz all the time. Well, jazz bars in Ohrid and Bitola are just bars, so, this is the first jazz restaurant in Macedonia. Bravo, Georgi.

「ミャウミャウ」は公園の近くにあるギョルギ・シャレフスキが開いた新しいジャズレストランです。本物のジャズバーのごとく、すごいいいサウンドシステムが装備されています。ジャズが流れるレストランでごはん食べるのっていいですよねー。ちゃんとおいしいイタリアンだし。NYのレストランを思い出します。いままでそういうところ、ありませんでしたから、スコピエには。ていうか、ビトラとオフリドにあるのはジャズバーだから、ジャズレストランってのはマケドニア初か。やるじゃん、ギョルギ。

Project Zlust, the band I like most in Macedonia, had a concert with Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra yesterday. It was very exciting to listen the Project Zlust's cool jazzy music with full orchestra. Very dynamic. I like the Project Zlust's project.

私の好きなマケドニアのジャジーバンド「プロジェクトズラスト」とマケドニアフィルハーモニーとのコラボレーションコンサートがありました。プロジェクトズラストのクールなジャズ系音楽にフルオーケストラがついたライブは、めっちゃダイナミックでかっこよかったです。｢プロジェクトズラスト｣のプロジェクト、いいセンスしてます。

ednooki

Ednooki (one eyed) is my favorite Macedonian political satire cartoon TV program. Sometime they use English, especially for topics of international politics, but most of the topics are local politics and it is in Macedonian. Still I enjoyed it a lot. I can tell it is well done and funny from how characters of current political players are depicted. It always takes up current hot topics, like the fist fighting in the Parliament or the country name dispute with Greek, with comical skits. It is like a cartoon version of the Saturday Night Live. If you are familiar with Macedonian politics, you would definitely laugh. (and imagine, why "one eyed"?)

「エドノオキ(一つ目)」は私のお気に入りの痛烈な政治風刺アニメ番組です。マケドニアの政治や国際関係などでホットなネタを超おかしく描きます。国際関係ネタのときは英語でやってくれるのですが、マケドニア政治ネタはマケドニア語です。それでもけっこう可笑しいと思えるのは、やっぱり画がキャラ立ちしているからでしょうか。マケドニア政治の主要プレイヤーの似顔絵が超そっくり。扱うネタもその時ホットな政治ネタが多く、例えば、この間あった国会での政治家同士の殴りあい事件とか、マケドニアの国名に関するギリシアとの確執とかを、おもしろおかしく風刺します。その痛烈さ具合がサタデーナイトライブの時事ネタスキットみたい。マケドニア政治ネタに詳しい人はぜひ見てみてください↑。笑えると思います。(なぜ「一つ目｣というタイトルか含め)。

The famous Macedonian film director Milcho Manchevski's new movie, "Shadows (the original name is Senki)" had a premiere opening this weekend in Skopje. It was a beautiful movie, featuring scenes of modern Skopje and Macedonia very well, not only physical scenes, but also in terms of Macedonian's life, culture, customs, practices and habits, etc...(for those who are wondering how my life in Skopje is like, maybe this movie is a good reference ;-P) Although I maybe not fully understood the movie because it was only in Macedonian (no English subtitle), but still I enjoyed a lot. Especially I like Milco Mancevski's shooting angle. It has a certain, unique taste in the visuals with something very thick, strong contrast of colors and objects, thus creating the beautiful images.

今週末、マケドニア人の有名な映画監督ミルチョ・マンチェフスキの新作映画「シャドウ(マケドニア語では「センキ」)」のオープニングがありました。現代のスコピエやマケドニアの生活、カルチャー、習慣、風景などなどが、ミルチョ・マンチェフスキ独特の映像美でよくフィーチャーされていて、非常によく出来た映画でした。おすすめです。

A Japanese traditional drum (taiko) and shamisen band, Bu-shi-do had a concert in Skopje. I did not expect the taiko and shamisen band can be so much entertaining, but all these kids who know how to play the traditional instruments are very much good at entertaining people. Not just playing tapani (taiko in Macedonian) and shamisen cool, but they also do dancing, jumping, backflipping, and even hip-hop scratching. Especially the second half of the stage was very entertaining, when they played taiko more rocky, jazzy, jumpy style. It reminded me "Johnny's" boys. (Johnny's is a very famous Japanese talent management company to manage very popular, cute boys idol (idoru, in another word) groups, who do singing, dancing and jumping.) The first half of the stage, when they played taiko and shamisen traditional way, wearing kimono, was also cool. Funny thing is it reminded me the fact that I had played a taiko for Bonodori (a community summer dancing festival in Japan) when I was a kid. hahahaha (^0^) .... Anyway, it was quite fun. It seems Macedonian liked them too. Next day, my girl co-worker told me they want Bu-shi-do to come back again next year. (Unfortunately, my camera battery run out, so, photos are only from the first half.. sorry)

先日スコピエで、日本国際交流基金の支援により、和太鼓・三味線プレイヤーのグループ「Bu-Shi-Do」のコンサートがありました。和太鼓と三味線と聞いて伝統的な日本っぽい音楽を想像していったらぜんぜん違いました。もちろん、着物を着て伝統的な津軽じょんから節とかの古典曲や助六流和太鼓曲とか和の心もじっくり聞かせるのですが、とくに後半は和太鼓と三味線をロック風とかジャズ風に演奏したりして非常にかっこいいエンタメ仕上げになっていて、しかもなんだか盛り上げ上手の若くてかわいい男の子たちがとんだりはねたり踊ったりしてて、ジャニーズのステージかと思っちゃいました。伝統的な曲を演奏してた前半も十分かっこよく、日本文化かっこいー、とか思いつつ、それで思い出したのが、自分の子供の頃、そういえば地元の盆踊りでタイコたたいたんだよなあ、みたいな。相当リズムずれてたんだよなあ、なんて。ははは。ま、とにかく、なんだかすごい楽しいコンサートで、マケドニア人もみんなすっごく盛り上がってました。次の日とか、オフィスの女の子に「ああいう盛り上げ上手なステージってマケドニアにはないのよねえ。来年も是非来てほしいわ」って言われました。(デジカメの電池が途中で切れたので、写真は前半の伝統的部分だけです。後半はロック系の服装で、ロック風電子三味線とか移動タイコとかだったんですけど、写真なくてごめん。webではこんなカンジ　http://www.j-station.biz/bu-shi-do/)

There was the first Wine Festival in Skopje this weekend. Macedonia has good wines, but not so well known. More marketing efforts are required in general and I would say this was a good first step. Although the event size was small this time, but in terms of location and set-ups, it was very well done to create a sophisticated image. It was on a riverbank, few steps down from the main squre, next to the stonebridge, and a white-cloth roof covered event booths, which made the whole event look a bit hidden and something exclusive and special. Several Macedonian wine brands were exhibited at the booths and you can try them around with a glass you can get at the entrance. If the live band were playing jazz, it could be even better.

この週末、マケドニア広場の橋のたもとでワインフェスティバルがありました。マケドニアはおいしいワインがあるのですが、あまり知られておらず、もっとマーケティング努力が必要とされています。今回のこのスコピエ第一回目のイベントは小規模ながらなかなかよい第一歩だったのではないでしょうか。とくに広場から一段下がったヴァルダル川の川岸で橋のたもとで、というロケーションと、白い布の屋根に囲まれていて一見ブースが見えない隠れたカンジが、ちょっと｢エクスクルーシヴ｣な雰囲気を出していて、ブランドイメージ向上に役立ってました。いくつかのワインブランドが出展していて、入り口でもらったグラスを持ちながらあちこちブースを廻りながらテイスティングが出来るようになってたのもよろしい。あれで、ライブバンドがジャズとかやってたらもっとよかったんだけどね。

From October 11 to today, there was a Japanese Film Festival. Unlike last year, this year's line up was mostly recent work like GO, Ping-pong Onsen, Bright Future, etc. I had never watched Japanese movies as my choice when I was living in Japan, but watching Japanese movies in non-Japanese countries is actually very interesting. Seeing Japanese culture from a different view. Japanese are funny ;-P

10/11-16で日本映画祭をやってました。今年は去年とは違って、けっこう新し目のラインアップで、卓球温泉とか、GOとか、明るい未来、とかやってました。日本に住んでいた頃は日本映画なんて自分の見る映画のチョイスになかったのですが、海外に住んで日本映画を見るっていうのは、日本文化をまた違った視点から見たり出来るのでけっこう面白いんです。日本ってなかなかエスニックな興味深い国ですわ。

今週末はデイヴィッド・シルヴィアンのコンサートがありました(誰だっけ、みたいな。なつかしのJ-WAVEイメージ)。今週末は4連休で長い週末だったにも関わらず、めずらしくおとなしくスコピエにいました。日本映画際もあったし、なかなかイベントだくさんな週末でした。来週末はなんと!　毎年恒例のスコピエジャズフェスティバル。ああ、なんて忙しいんでしょ。

exhibition of japanese handcraft

As one of the Bela Nok events, there was an opening of the exhibition of Japanese handcraft at Skopje Museum, funded by Japan Foundation. It introduces Japanese traditional hand-made craft products such as Imari ware, Bizen ware and Yu-zen, etc. Maybe because it was a part of Bela Nok or because of high interest towards Japanese culture, the venue was filled with people. The exhibition is very exquisite. Good selection of contents and well displayed. Even japonka can enjoy. It will last for 2 weeks. Definitely a must-go event. I hope it will inspire many Macedonian.

ベラ・ノキのイベントのひとつとして、日本の伝統工芸品の展覧会のオープニングがありました。国際交流基金の支援によって実現したもので、ベラ・ノキイベントのひとつだったからか、それとも日本文化に対する関心の高さからか、会場はたくさんの人であふれかえりました。備前焼とか伊万里焼とか友禅とか、けっこう日本人の私でも楽しめるような内容で、きれいにディスプレイされているし、なかなかいい感じです。展覧会は2週間続くのでなるべく多くの人に見てもらって日本文化への造詣を深めてもらいたいところです。

It was the third year for Bela Nok (white night) event and the first time for me to be there. There were series of events held everywhere in Skopje, like live band music in the Macedonian Square or at other outdoor stages, exhibitions in museums, street performances, arty movies, etc. I did not go last 2 years, but, seeing from the program this year, I think this year event was quite extensive and had wider varieties of cultural performances than ever. There were full of people in the center of Skopje, from teenagers to older people. Actually, it was very impressive. With the amount of people who were there, the scale and varieties of contents, and the number of locations of events.

「ベラ・ノキ(白夜)」イベントは今年で第三回目を迎えるのですが、私は今年初めて行ってみました。土曜の夜から次の日の朝にかけて、ライブ音楽やら展覧会やらストリートパフォーマンスやらいろいろなイベントがメイン広場を中心にスコピエのあちこちで行われます。過去二回のイベントには行ったことがないので比べられませんが、それでもたぶんプログラムを見るからに、今年のイベントは過去になく非常に充実しているような気がします。イベントの数やらロケーションやら内容の多様性やら見ても。よくできてましたよ。また人がたくさん出ていたこと。老若男女、道にあふれかえっていました。

Georgi Sarevski is a young Macedonian Jazz guitarist. There was his concert as a part of the Skopje Summer Festival. I do not know anything about how to play a guitar, but I can tell the way he plays a guitar is very unique and creative, and I like it.

ギョルギ・シャレフスキは若いマケドニア人ジャズギタリストです。今月ずっとやっているスコピエ・サマー・フェスティバルの一環の彼のコンサートに行ってきました。ギターとかよく知りませんが、彼の弾き方は非常にユニークかつクリエイティブなのではないかと思います。そういうの好きなんですよね。

Last week, he was in Macedonia, doing "Concert marathon" for 2 days. Well, I went to the 2nd day, it was 3 hours performance in a warm room. Indeed, it was like marathon, requiring endurance. But it was fun. He played with his students and other talented young Macedonian musicians. It was like a promotion event for those young people.

シモン・トルプチェスキは世界で活躍している有名マケドニア人ピアニストです。先日、スコピエで二日間にわたる彼の「コンサートマラソン」なるものがあったので、二日目だけ行ってみました。いやいやそれでも十分「マラソン」でした。エアコンの利きが悪い暑い部屋で三時間。耐久性が要求されました。でも楽しかったですよ。すごく楽しそうにピアノ弾くんですよね、彼は。そして彼の生徒やら才能のあるマケドニア人の若いミュージシャンやらとのパフォーマンスもなかなかよかったです。若者のプロモーションの場だったのかしら、ってカンジでしたけど。

Last weekend, Bebel Gilberto. This weekend, Laurie Anderson. Lots of events going on in Skopje lately. Simon Trpceski, a globally famous Macedonian pianist, will have a concert in Skopje this week also.

先週末はべベル・ジルベルト。今週末はローリー・アンダーソン。なんだかここのところイベントが続いています。今週はマケドニアが世界に誇るピアニスト、サイモン・トルプチェスキのコンサートもあるんだよなあ。

gotan project

Gotan Project came to Skopje as a part of OFFEST 2007. OFFEST is an offseason event of Skopje Jazz Festival. Last year, OFFEST had Massive Attack and Los de Abajo, and this year, there was this Gotan Project as an opening, and also Balkan Beat Box, which I missed, and there will be Bebel Gilberto! the daughter of Joan Gilberto is coming to Skopje. That is a big. How gorgeous is it this year. Anyway, back to about Gotan Project, their music is tango-electro fusion, and their stage effect was very cool; how they use video image and sampling was very nouveau. Fusion of visual and sounds. Must buy their CDs, but the live is better, I guess. I had never seen the Universal Sala became full like that until this time.

ゴタンプロジェクトのライブは「オフフェス」のオープニングでした。オフフェスはスコピエジャズフェスティバルのオフシーズンイベントで、去年はマッシブアタックとかロスデアバホとか来てました。今年はゴタンプロジェクト、バルカンビートボックス、とけっこうかっこいい音系が来てます。なんとジョアン・ジルベルトの娘、べベル・ジルベルトも来るんですよ。今年はなんだかゴージャスだなあ。。。ゴタンプロジェクトの音楽は、エレクトロ-タンゴフュージョンとでもいいましょうか、めっちゃダンサブルなかっこいい音です。舞台演出もかっこよくて、ビジュアルと音楽の融合が非常によく練られていて、CDもマストバイだけど、ライブで聴いた方がぜったいいタイプ。

Boy George is coming to Skopje during the Easter weekend for DJ-ing. Unfortunately(?) I will be away from Macedonia since it is a long weekend. But, ...why Boy George? Sure, he is cool. But, how come only those-who-used-to-be-famous, like Pet Shop Boys or Massive Attack or whatever, come to Macedonia. Why not people from current music scene....

今度のイースターの週末にはスコピエになんと「ボーイジョージ」がやってくる。シンガーとしてではなくってDJとしてだって。残念ながら(?)、私はその週末はマケドニア国外に脱出しておりますが(4連休なので)、しかしなんでまたいまさらボーイジョージ。なんでマケドニアってこう「かつての」有名人しか来ないんでしょ。マッシヴアタックとかペットショップボーイズとかさあ。。。もっとイマドキの有名人が来てくれたらいいのに。

There was an exhibition of a Macedonian artist with concept of "Wabi Sabi". Wabi Sabi is very difficult concept to explain to non-Japanese because it involves deep feelings of Japanese towards impermanence nature of things. Wiki explains somehow, but I guess it is difficult to really understand as own "experience" or feelings. And this artist seems somehow try to express it. Whether she understands the concept by experience or not (I believe she does), I liked her cute style of the drawings. Seeing from this or Macedonian haiku, it seems Japanese concept is well accepted in Macedonia. Good.

ちょっと前のことになりますが、マケドニア人のあるアーティストによる「侘寂」をコンセプトとしたギャラリー展示がありました。「侘寂」って日本人じゃない人にはけっこう理解するのが難しいコンセプトではないかと思うのですが、そのアーティストの女の子はけっこうがんばってました。かわいい絵だし、いい味出しているし。墨使っているのかな。この間のマケドニア俳句もそうですが、日本の「侘寂」までもがマケドニアで受け入れられているのかと思うと、なんかいいっすね。

There was an exhibition of a Macedonian designer, who studied in Japan, at a gallery in Skopje. She used Japanese Katakana for a basis of the design work. Some of the work looks like using Macedonian words written in Katakana, like "Pivo (beer)". I would call this the cute fusion of Japanese and Macedonian culture.

日本に留学していたマケドニア人のデザイナーの女の子の展示会がスコピエのギャラリーでありました。カタカナをベースにした文字のデザインワークが主で、マケドニア語の単語をカタカナで表記したもののデザインとかあったりして、まさに日本とマケドニアの文化の融合。「ピボ」ってビールのことですよ。

howl's moving castle, croatian version

Macedonian language is similar to both the Serbian and Bulgarian language. Many Macedonian can communicate with Serbian people (or Bulgarian people) in the Macedonian language. And the Croatian language and Serbian language are very similar, so, most of Macedonian can understand the Croatian language. That is why the Croatian version of "Howl's Moving Castle (the famous Miyazaki movie)" is available in Macedonia. It is impressive to see how far Japanese anime can go in the global market, and nice to see that another product from Japan impresses people in Balkans.
By the way, it is known that Kiki's Delivery Service (another Miyazaki’s film) uses Dubrovnik as a model for the town scene, but i found that this Howl's stuff seems also using the scenery from Croatia or Balkan countries (including Macedonia). The scenery in the movie like the village and sheep, the town, the port and the mountains are like the ones that you can see around here.

マケドニア語はセルビア語にもブルガリア語にも似ているので、マケドニア人はセルビア人やブルガリア人とマケドニア語でコミュニケーションをとることができます。そしてクロアチア語はセルビア語と似ているので（というか、もともと同じ言葉なんで）、ほとんどのマケドニア人はクロアチア語も理解できます。ということで、「ハウルの動く城」クロアチア語バージョンをマケドニアで見ることができるのもなんの不思議もありません。日本から離れたこんな遠くのバルカンでも日本のアニメが見られているってのは、日本人として誇りに思っていいんじゃないでしょうか。
ところで、「魔女の宅急便」でクロアチアのドゥブロブニクが街のシーンのモデルになったことは有名ですが、このハウルの映画の中でも、村と羊のシーンとか、港町とか山々とか、なんか風景がクロアチアとか(マケドニアも含む)バルカンのこのあたりの風景に非常に似ているような気がするんですよねえ。
