pita

On the occasion of Orthodox Christmas or/and Orthodox New Year, Macedonian eat pita (a kind of bread) and do this "coin" thing. When someone makes the pita, she/he puts a coin into the dough and bakes it. Then, when they eat it, sharing together with family or friends or co-workers, one of them gets the coin in her/his portion. It is said whoever gets the coin-contained pita slice will have "luck" this year. And, yes, I got a coin.

正教のクリスマスや正月のとき、マケドニア人はこのピタというパンみたいなものを焼いて食べる習慣があります。ピタを作るときに、作る人があらかじめコインを一枚ネタに仕込んで焼きます。そして家族や友人や同僚同士みんなでシェアして食べるのですが、そのときコイン入りのピタスライスをゲットした人に今年ラッキーなことがあるという言い伝えがあります。ふふ、そして私は今年このコイン入りピタが当たりました。さいさき良し、です。
