chicken chorba

Another menu from my office restaurant; Chicken chorba. Chorba is a Turkish style soup, very thick with extract of chicken and vegetables. There is also beef chorba. Both are good with rice, but I eat with bread most of the time, and sometimes with a toast, which is another my favorite menu (at the corner of the photo). This toast is also yummy in a crispy & juicy way. A thick round bread is toasted with ham and cheese with ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard. It is pressed to flat and that is why it is crispy outside, and juicy inside. It is like the dutch jaffles that I had in Bali. See how much I am satisfied with Macedonian foods.

chicken saute

There are questions if Japanese rice matches with Macedonian dishes. Well, then, I would like to introduce the chicken saute with rice, which is my favorite at my office restaurant. Chicken saute is mushroom sauce base with onion and Italian parsley, served with rice. Rice comes with it as a part of Macedonian dishes, not specially made for a Japanese girl. See, rice matches with chicken saute very well. Yes, Macedonian are rice eaters although they only have potato cookers.

a rice cooker came to my house

Finally, I was able to buy a rice cooker in Vienna. Everything that is required for a Japanese girl to cook is set. Now I am cooking. I will move from a country to a country with this rice cooker.

christkindlmarkt in vienna

I had a trip to Vienna for a meeting. As it happened to be in the Christmas season, there are street markets everywhere for Christmas ornaments, candles and winter wines. It is a nice season to visit Vienna. Very beautiful.

makedonski chai

This is my pick, Macedonian tea. It is a mix of rose hip, mint and acacia flower. It tastes faintly sour and minty fresh. Very good for relaxing. Dobra tea.

more about Ramstore

More talks about Ramstore. Its tea collection is amazing. Macedonian has tea drinking custom as Japanese, so it also makes me easier to adjust myself here. But the difference is that Macedonian drink tea more likely when the person is sick, whereas Japanese drink tea anytime. The tea line up at Ramstore shows it is true, because many of those teas are like nettle, elder flower and balm tea, which have some healing effects. There are also regular tea such as green tea, earl grey or many kinds of herb teas like hibiscus, mint, rose hip, camomille or whatever. Now I have a shelf filled with tea collection at home.

a wine promotion at Ramstore

Speaking of Ramstore, even although vegetables are not fresh, Ramstore is still an eventful place. Right now, a wine promotion campaign is on. Macedonia is famous for its wine. There are good merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and pinot noir. You can have them at any 'national' restaurant. What I like is Tug za Jug, which I think is as good as some Italian wines. Bovin is also famous as Macedonian wine. Bovin has cooler bottle design and is doing better branding than other brands, speaking from a point of view of a former ad girl. I guess Macedonian wines are imported to Japan. I am not sure if you can get them in NY. Anyway, try it if you find one.

a vegetable shop

It was a beautiful sunny day today. Although, it was cold enough to wear a long coat. In the winter like this, I would not go to Ramstore anymore since it is a bit far, unless there is something I can get only in Ramstore. Besides, vegetables at Ramstore are always not so fresh, so, lately, I buy vegetables and fruits from this shop, which is located on my way home and opens until late at night. Very convenient.
Vegetable line up in Macedonia is quite impressive. There are Daikon (japanese radish), Hakusai (chinese cabbage) and scallion, all of which are essential items in Japanese cooking. So, as a Japanese girl who cooks does not have any problem to cook Japanese food in Macedonia once she can get basic Japanese seasonings (and a rice cooker).

the first snowfall of the season

aaaah, it is going to be a long winter. I hope it is not worse than NY.

toto's food

Although we almost ate up, these are the dishes from Toto. See the tavce-gravce, very good one, and grilled bread, very yummy one, and lemonade, hardly seen at the left bottom.

tonari no toto

Speaking of good tavce-gravce, there is a really good Macedonian restaurant that serves excellent tavce-gravce in my neighborhood. Toto. It is famous for grills, but other side dishes such as tavce-gravce and shopska salata are all good. And the grilled bread and fresh lemonade are super! I like its cozy, homy atmosphere too.

tavce-gravce

This is the tavce-gravce. The oven baked bean dish. Very tasty.

a national restaurant in bitola - grnb

Still I want to talk about Bitola. I mentioned several times that foods in Macedonia are all good so far, and here is this restaurant, GRNB, in Bitola. Tavce-gravce, taratur, and chai were good there. Nice interior design too. "National" restaurant sounds funny in English, but it means that they serve Macedonian foods. It does not mean that the restaurant is owned by the nation (and the Russian flag does not mean anything, there is just the consulate in the 2nd floor).

mosaic of heraklea

A sneak preview of the mosaics. See the birds?

ruins of heraklea in bitola

Unfortunately, the famous mosaics are not shown during this period for protecting from the winter freeze, but it is still amazing to see a piece of an ancient history. Heraklea is famous for its dazzling mosaics (covered by sands; in the center of the photo), ancient theater and Roman baths from the Ancient Macedonian empire surviving in the country. It is there since the 4th Century BC and then conquered by Romans two centuries later.

city of bitola

Lately, I am having field trips and have discovered that there are many beautiful cities and towns in Macedonia.
Bitola has beautiful streets with old buildings of more than a century ago, when the town was a center for international diplomats to the Ottoman administration. It is 2.5 hour drive away from Skopje. Since there was no earthquake as Skopje had, Bitola still has a grand-old-(European) town look that still bears the marks from the turn of the century. I liked it. I want to spend more time there next time.

a view from mt. vodno

Maybe it is getting too much to talk about Mt. Vodno, but this is a view of Skopje from the bottom of the cross. It's ok view, right? Skopje looks a city. I do not know whether it is foggy or smoggy, but it is definitely that the air is not clean in Skopje from car fumes and people's smoking. Especially, about smoking. People smoke everywhere. Even in a hospital. You know how much I hate smoke. That is the only thing that I do not like about Skopje. And I was told that since it becomes foggy in Skopje during the winter, air stays lower and does not go anywhere. So, for next few months, the air in Skopje will become dirtiest in a year. That scares me.

the cross at mt. vodno

This is a night view of the cross from the city. You can see it from anywhere in Skopje. It is a landmark like the Empirestate building in NY. It does not change color by hours though.

mt. matka to mt. vodno 2

After climbing up Mt. Matka, the trekking course to Mt. Vodno was nothing. But, can you see the cross in the left photo? it is in the center, although it is hard to see it. This is how far we walked. After the Matka, all the way to Vodno seems flat. Well, it was 7 hour walk anyway. And of course, I have muscle pain all over my body today. You are welcome to Macedonia for trekking with me.

today's challenge - mt. matka to mt. vodno

Mt. Matka is located 20 minutes drive from Skopje. It is still in Skopje outskirts. It is a rocky mountain as you can see, and I climbed the mountain today. Climbing or trekking mountains is another entertainment for Skopje residents.
It was sunny, crisp day. Climbing Mt. Matka was real challenge to me. I had never climbed a mountain; I only had hiked sometime on easy trails. I was told that it is a hike or trekking, but actually it was not that easy thing. We were climbing rocky animal trails. See, how rocky and high the view is. And more, after climbing Mt. Matka, we trekked to Mt. Vodno, which has the famous big cross on top. Overall the walk took 7 hours. I bet I will have muscle pain tomorrow.

a view from the lake

See, this is the church Kaneo and the church underneath. Beautiful, isn't it?
It is said that there used to be 365 churches in Ohrid- one for each day to visit in the year. There are also some churches that can be accessed only by a boat. Doesn't it sound intriguing?

a church under st. kaneo

There is a small church, under the cliff of St. Kaneo church, near lakeshore. It is a simple church and does not seem like having a distinctive story, but the view from inside is beautiful. There is water in front of the window. And there is a small spring that is said purifies people's suffering. There are not so many people coming down to this under cliff church. So, it is very quite. It is a pretty hideaway.

springs of st. naum

I think that Macedonia has potential for a tourist destination since there are many good tourism resources. And this springs of St. Naum is one of them. You can see the origin of the lake. The holes on the white sand in the picture; they are the springs, of which water come from Prespa lake, a mountain next to Ohrid, through the underground. It is amazing how clear the water is. Just watching them makes me relaxed. I believe there is a purifying power in the area.
