Sometimes someone steals it to make money because it can be sold as a steel lump. Even though new one is installed, someone will steal it again anyway. So, this is the solution. A hole on the street or this concrete lump, either way, it is not safe for pedestrians.
So, Ornette Coleman. It is always good to see a great achiever. Especially, great jazzmen. He was releasing the aura at the moment he entered the stage. For the age of 76, his power of drawing the audience's attention was amazing. Dazzling. The stage was so tense. It was like fighting each other. Maybe that is free jazz. It is an art form, already. And what was cool most was; during the encore, he invited audience to join the stage like "anyone feels like singing?" One guy stood up, started to sing, and the band followed. Improvisation, indeed. That's jazz! Gorgeous! Ornette Coleman plays with you? how gorgeous is it. I should have practiced my karaoke skills more ;-P
So, I went. I bought tickets for Saturday and Monday of Universal Sala's performance (http://www.skopjejazzfest.com.mk/).
Nadzak is a neighborhood restaurant to serve "casual Macedonian food" (defined by me), which means like kebapce (photo), shopska salad, grilled cheese, garlic hot pepper, etc, the food you can get anywhere in Macedonia. I like Nadzak because of its teleshka corba (beef soup), particularly.
Universal Sala, another strange kind of architecture, is for concerts and events that expect relatively large audience. From tomorrow, Skopje Jazz Festival will be held at this place.
The Central heating of the Skopje City is on from today. It happens to be the temperature went down from today, like -1C for the lowest (ooooh-). It is the perfect timing to have the heating. The room is warmer(phew). Now, my humidifier will be on too. The air here could go very dry, with the heater particularly. But, it seems humidifying is not the common concept in Macedonia. I was asked why I am buying the humidifier last year, when I was looking for it. Although, it was not so difficult to find a humidifier in the country, unlike a rice cooker ;-P
Sofia, Bulgaria, is 3.5 - 4 hour drive away from Skopje. Since there is no highway between Skopje and Sofia, it is more like the mountain road, it takes some time to get to Sofia. It takes even more time if you take a bus (especially when passing the border). But it is worth to visit there sometime. I did not expect Sofia is that cute in terms of the old buildings, cafe and restaurants. Maybe just because we found very good cafe and restaurant there.
It seems new semester started since October 1st at Skopje University (the real name is "Ss. Cyril and Methodius University"). It is the top university in Macedonia as one of few universities. It has several buildings spread around in the city. This building (photo) is for Faculty of Law. In this complex, there are also Faculty of Economy and other Social Sciences. The buildings there have former Yugoslavian style architecture, sort of, like the post office near the Government. Frankenstein feature, I would say.
Pauza is a new cafe restaurant opened on a small, nice street leading to the Macedonian Square. It is next to the Swiss Embassy. It has high ceilings, brick walls and large windows, which remind me a cafe in NY. Very cozy. It serves light meals like soup, salad and sandwiches with good coffee. For a girl who needs soup for lunch, it is good to have a nice, cozy, soup lunch place, which does not exist so many in Skopje. You can even make food "to-go".
There will be Skopje Jazz Festival in the weekend of October 20. Ornette Coleman (wow) is coming to Skopje. It seems there are many Macedonian who like Jazz and everybody is looking forward to this annual event. There is a very cool jazz bar in Bitola, and I heard there is also one in Ohrid. In Skopje, there is no cool jazz bar, except the Jazz night at Mamas and Ljybov cafe. And this weekend (and next weekend), there is Macedonian Jazz Nights at Malastanica as a teaser of Skopje Jazz Festival. Jazzmen are all Macedonian. As a japonka who likes jazz, of course I am going to check out.
I knew Skopje City Park for the place sometimes music events are held at its open-air stage. But I did not know the park has that much extensive, green-rich environment. Really. It is a surprise to me. Also, it has ponds and streams and hills as well as a nice walk path along the River Vardar. It is very nice to take a walk in a sunny autumn weekend. So, there is still a discovery sometimes, in this small city, even after one year stay.
Speaking of Mexican, there is one more Mexican restaurant in Skopje. There, I have tried their food several times and it was ok. I guess it is hard to make Mexican food bad. Actually, to me, Mexican food is hardly a food, more like a snack, so, the taste can not be a competitive advantage much (to me, at least). In terms of the location, Amigo wins. I will give the comparative rating once I try the food at Amigo.
