This is a small garbage clean-up tricycle donated by Japan. Cute vehicle. It makes easier to drive on a small street and collect small garbage on a street. In fact, garbage is everywhere scattered on the streets in Skopje and this tricycle system is supposed to help clean it up a bit.

この三輪トラック、日本の草の根無償プロジェクトでスコピエ市が買ったものです。かわいいんですよね、こいつが道路をがーって走っていると。スコピエはあちこちにゴミが散乱しているので、こういう小回りの効くゴミトラックが必要なんだそうで。すごくいい協力です、これ。

These naive dolls are from Zrovci, a municipality in the eastern Macedonia. These ethnic clothes are a style from the eastern Macedonia. Very exotic. The photo looks blur, but it is in focus in fact. The dolls look blur, because the dolls are made from wool, and their surface is a bit shaggy, so when you actually see them with the naked eye, they exactly look like this, blurry in real. I think that makes dolls look more simple, naive and precious.

この素朴な人形は東部マケドニアのツルノフチという町で作られたものです。東部マケドニアの伝統衣装を着たカンジがいいカンジなので、なんかいいお土産になりそう。この写真、なんかブレてる感じがするけれど、でもそうじゃないんです。ピンはきっちりあっているんですけど、この人形の素材が羊の毛で、なんか表面がもしゃもしゃしているため、そう見えるだけです。ホントの目で見ても、なんかもしゃもしゃして見るので目の焦点が定めにくい感じです。

Speaking of Japanese, Karate is a popular sport in Macedonia. There will be the Western Balkan Karate Championship in Macedonia this year. Karate players from other Western Balkan countries will come here.

日本モノと言えば、空手ってけっこうマケドニアで人気なんですよねえ。今年はマケドニアで「西バルカン空手チャンピョンシップ大会」なるものが開催されるそうです。西バルカン地域の他の国、セルビアとかボスニアとかから、空手選手が集合するそうで。

As I mentioned before, there are many poor graffiti in Skopje like children's drawings. I usually ignore those because most of them are just ugly. But I was surprised when I saw the graffiti written in Japanese. There are some Macedonian who know Japanese. Good. (^ ^)

前にも言いましたが、スコピエには下手な落書きがいっぱいあります。大体は下手なのでいつも無視してますが、でもさすがに日本語で書かれた落書きを見つけたときには、おーっと思いました。日本語できるマケドニア人、ちょっとはいるみたいです。

For Japanese (or foreigners in general?), there is not much information available about Macedonia's tourism, but Macedonia is not just about Ohrid. There are other sites and activities especially for mountain and nature lovers as well as history lovers. And this agent, Adventure Guide Macedonia, makes the trips to and activities at those sites possible with its value-added work. It provides group tours presenting Macedonia with its culture, traditions, archaeological and historical values and untouched nature. But I usually prefer customized tours, which I think shows their real value-added service capability. I was really impressed their diligent, meticulous service such as on-time delivery, quick response to customers' requests, and sincere attitudes to nature and work, all of which are rare to meet in Macedonia. Who could expect to have coffee with a real cup (not a paper cup!) at the top of the Kokino Observatory. Sure, it is a bit heavier to carry, but it is more kind to nature by not creating extra garbage. Mmmm, I like the idea. Very professional. Next time, I want to go to Kuklica with them.

kokino observatory

These are not just rocks. It is an ancient megalithic observatory from the Bronze Age (like more than 3,800 years old), which was discovered in 2001 in Macedonia. It is located 1,030m above sea level on the Tativec Kamen Summit near Kumanovo. According to NASA's ancient observatory list(?) of 2005, this Kokino observatory is the fourth oldest site in the world, after Abu Simbel in Egypt, Stonehenge in Britain and Angkor Wat in Cambodia. That sounds very attractive, isn't it? It could be a very significant tourism resource of Macedonia, so I went to check it out during this weekend. Well, totally recommended. It is intellectually inspiring. There are studies that show special markers of stones, used for marking all characteristics points of the movement of the Sun and Moon on the east horizon or at the winter and summer solstice, as well as the equinox. It is amazing to see how all the work was done in such an ancient time. You need someone to point out where these markers are on the rocks. Otherwise it is just a rocky place. 前々からちょっと聞いていた古代天文観測所「コキノ・オブザーバトリー」に行ってきました。クマノボのちょっと先の山の中にある、2001年に発見されたばっかりの遺跡(?)で今もまだ調査が続けられているのですが、その貴重さについてはすでに認識されており、NASAの古代天文観測所リストでイギリスのストーンヘンジに続いて世界で四番目に古いとされている貴重な場所です。エジプトのアブシンベルとかカンボジアのアンコールワットとかもそのリストにある古代天文観測所とされています。そんな貴重なものがマケドニアにあるなんて!!　そりゃあそんな大事な観光素材となるべきものをチェックしないわけにいかないでしょ、ってことで行ってきました。。。いやあ、よかったですよ。なんか昔の人ってすごい。その岩々の観測所は、太陽や月の動きがすべて岩に記されていて、夏至やら冬至やら春分やらがすべて刻み込まれているんですよ。なんでそんな3800年も前にそんなことが出来たんだろう、と感動します。ぱっと見、ただの岩々の山なのですが、あの岩が春分点を示していて、とか解説を聞くと、ほほーなんてすごいんだ、ということになります。やっぱプロのツアーガイドと行った方がいいですよ、でないとどれもタダの岩に見えますから。お勧めは、http://adventureguidemacedonia.com/。いやあ、マケドニアの観光、これからますますイケますよ。

lezet's summer menu

I was complaining about no more smoothie in Skopje because Pastis was gone, but now I found Lezet's summer menu offering good smoothies. Since Lezet does not have open air space, there are less people going there during summer- that is why this smoothie menu, I guess. Good marketing. I will go as long as the summer menu is there. It serves also a very nice fruits plate. I am the right target of Lezet.

パスティスがなくなっちゃったんで、スコピエにはスムーチーが飲めるところはないとぶつぶつ言っていましたが、なんとうちのご近所カフェ「レゼット」が夏のメニューとしてスムーチーをやっていることを発見。大きなフルーツプレートとかもあり、けっこううれしいかも。レゼットってオープンエアのスペースがないからけっこう夏向きカフェじゃないんだよね。だからスムーチーか。グッドマーケティング。私はスムーチーがある限り通うぞ。

ohrid - souvenir

Not only Ohrid pearls, but also these silver and copper relief works could be good souvenirs of Ohrid. Especially I found this Anastas Dudan's work is very nice. He seems a unique artist according to his website: "he is the only one who has achieved excellent results "reviving" the exceptional values of the Macedonian medieval icon and fresco painting environment, capturing the essence of those works through the beating and hammering of metal surfaces." オフリドのお土産といえば「オフリドパール」が有名ですが、シルバー細工とかもけっこう有名で、私はこのアナスタス・デュダン氏のアートワークがけっこう気に入りました。彼のWebサイトのコメントを見ると、どうも彼はマケドニア王国時代のイコンやらフレスコやらマスクやらの素材を見事に銀銅細工で再現した人として有名なアーティストとのこと。けっこうお値段は高いのですが(下の大きな額で六百ユーロくらい)、それなりの価値アリのものに見えましたよ。

ohrid night - jazz inn

Another first time experience was "staying in Ohrid." I always had only day trips. So, there was no chance to visit this Jazz bar, "Jazz Inn," until this time. I heard about this jazz bar when people are talking about there is no jazz bar in Skopje, but are in Bitola and Ohrid. It was a cool bar like the ones you can find in Harlem, NY, like Showman's. I liked the simple, classic bar counter style in the wooden interior with the dark lighting.

他にも今回の「初めて」が。いつもオフリドは日帰りだったのですが、今回は一泊しました。そして、ウワサの「Jazz Inn」へ。スコピエにはジャズバーがないんだよね、という話のときに、ビトラとオフリドにはあるんだよ、ということで聞いていた、オフリドのジャズバー。なかなかクールでした。なんかNYのハーレムあたりで見かけるジャズバーみたいなカンジ。シンプルでクラッシックなバーカウンターがあって。木を使ったインテリアで、暗い照明で。すっかり気に入りました。

ohrid in spring

I have been to Ohrid several times but had never been in spring. This time was the first time. It was a warm, sunny, calm and beautiful day.

オフリドは何度か行ってますが、実は春のオフリドは初めて。素晴らしい天気で相変わらず美しい景色でした。

nice weather

It has been nice weather in Skopje, like more than 20C everyday. Very nice to go for a walk after work. But I forgot about the strong sun "beam" of Macedonia. Now it is the season again that I have to decide whether I should use a sunshade umbrella or not....

最近いい天気で毎日20℃を超える素晴らしい日々が続いていて、仕事の後、散歩に出たりするのがちょっとうれしい時期ですが、そういえばマケドニアの強い日差しのことを忘れてました。ああ、また今年も日傘さすかどうか、迷う日々が始まるのか、みたいな。

tube of food

I was surprised with the caviar tube in Sweden, but I found the same kind in Macedonia too. It is Nestle group's mayonnaise, so it is not Macedonian brand's food, more precisely, but it is still funny. Food in a tube. It seems not so new and surprising concept in Europe. Oh, but we also have wasabi tubes in Japan! OK, then, well.... the caviar tube has very different impression/ impact though.

スェーデンでチューブ入りのタラコペーストにびっくりしましたが、マケドニアにもチューブ入りの食べ物がありました。ツナペースト入りマヨネーズ。ネスレグループのブランドなのでマケドニアオリジナル製品ではありませんが、でもやっぱりチューブ入り食べ物って、、、なんか面白い。。。ヨーロッパではそう新しいコンセプトでもないみたいです。。。お、っでも日本にはマスタードとかワサビチューブがあるか。なんでタラコだとこんなに驚くんだろ。

gino

Gino is an Italian restaurant in the center shopping mall at the Macedonian square, but I like Gino as an ice cream shop. It has good gelato. In summer days like these days, ice cream at Gino is very recommended.

「ジーノ」はマケドニア広場のメインショッピングモールにあるイタリアンレストランですが、私はアイスクリーム屋さんとしてお気に入りです。ジェラートがおいしいんすよ、ここは。ここのところ夏の日続きですが、そういうときにはめっちゃ重宝です。

easter eggs

The first day at the office after Easter is the day to exchange eggs with wishes of healthy happy years. Like last year, I received colorful, boiled eggs. Beautiful work as always.

イースター連休後のオフィス初日はタマゴ交換会。去年もそうでしたが、カラフルに色づけされたゆで卵をいただきました。

Sweden is famous for its design work. There are many design goods shops and well-designed buildings, complex and interiors. Stockholm city itself is also well-designed. It is very comfortable to be surrounded by well-designed items. There are even well-designed chic McDonald's (photo right), which is said targeting for adults.

スウェーデンはデザインものが有名ですが、確かにその通りいいデザインのものがあちこちにありました。デザイングッズのショップもそうですけど、よくデザインされたビルとかコンプレックスとかショップインテリアとか。ストックホルムの街自体もよくデザインされているし。非常に居心地がいいんですよね、いいデザインのものに囲まれているのって。大人用の「シックなデザイン」マクドナルドを発見したときはオドロキでした(写真右)。。。

Since most of my trip destinations are usually developing countries, I had never been the country that provides more efficient, well-organized, good service than Japan until this trip to Stockholm. Amazing Sweden. No wonder it is one of the top competitive countries in the world. Photo top left: tickets to make a queue. Very Japanese like efficiency :D Top right: toilet doors to indicate whether it is open or not. Easy eye catch. Excessive service Japanese would like. Bottom left: collecting pet bottles and cans at supermarkets. Good cost reduction measure. Bottom right: caviar tube! Tastes like tarako (cod roe). A must-souvenir for Japanese. But, why fish eggs in a tube like toothpaste? Seems very strange idea to Japanese.

なんせ私が旅行するところは発展途上国が多いので、今回初めて、日本よりも効率的でよくオーガナイズされた素晴らしいサービスを提供する国に出会いました。スウェーデン、すごい。さすが世界で最も「競争的な国」のひとつなだけある。例えば、写真上左:　列を作るときにはちゃんとチケットを取って順番待ち。上右: トイレのドアノブで分かる「使用中」。明確すぎ。下左: スーパーマーケットでペットボトル回収。コスト削減になるよねえ。下右: なんとタラコがチューブに。効率的というか、面白すぎる。さすがデザインの国。不思議。チーズ味とかもあるので日本人へのおみやげとしていいのでは。しかし、なぜチューブ。歯磨き粉じゃないんだから。。。

For the long Easter weekend, I had a trip to Stockholm, Sweden. First trip to Scandinavia. There were things very new to me, quite eye-opening experience. First one was its archipelago features. I did not expect that many islands in North. So as waterways in Stockholm everywhere. Maybe because of the water everywhere, it was cold... still winter there.　

イースター連休を利用して、ストックホルムに行ってきました。スウェーデンって特にイメージもなく、なんとなく行ってみたのですが、行ってびっくり、けっこういろいろ驚かせられました。まずは、スウェーデンってたくさんの島があるってことにびっくり。ストックホルムも水に囲まれているし。だから余計寒いのか。。。寒かったですよ。まだ冬でした。

boy geroge in skopje

Boy George is coming to Skopje during the Easter weekend for DJ-ing. Unfortunately(?) I will be away from Macedonia since it is a long weekend. But, ...why Boy George? Sure, he is cool. But, how come only those-who-used-to-be-famous, like Pet Shop Boys or Massive Attack or whatever, come to Macedonia. Why not people from current music scene....

今度のイースターの週末にはスコピエになんと「ボーイジョージ」がやってくる。シンガーとしてではなくってDJとしてだって。残念ながら(?)、私はその週末はマケドニア国外に脱出しておりますが(4連休なので)、しかしなんでまたいまさらボーイジョージ。なんでマケドニアってこう「かつての」有名人しか来ないんでしょ。マッシヴアタックとかペットショップボーイズとかさあ。。。もっとイマドキの有名人が来てくれたらいいのに。

It seems kids wear costumes on April 1 in Macedonia. Looks like a spring Halloween party. But there are more queens and fairies than zombies.

マケドニアの4月1日は、子供たちがなにやら仮装する日なんですかね。ハロウィーンの日のように仮装した子供たちが広場に出回っていました。でもハロウィーンのゾンビやらフランケンシュタインやらとは違って今日は妖精とかお姫様とか、もっと明るい仮装が多かったのは春だからか。
